Today's item is "favorite guest character."





Kasabi!

To me, what makes a favorite guest character, rather than just one I like, is a character who shows a different side of one of the main stars, but is also an interesting character in his or her own right. Carnell is cool (maybe I'll choose him for "the coolest thing" XP), and I considered choosing him, but he doesn't really spark off the characters I care about in particularly interesting ways. Kasabi brings out a side of Servalan we don't see anywhere else. Much as I like Sand, Kasabi makes a much better contribution to Servalan's backstory than Don Keller. She also has wonderful presence. She doesn't really get that much more screen time than Avalon, but she's about 100 times more real to me as a person.

Honorable mention goes to Del Grant. Incidentally, when they were first describing Del Grant in Countdown (asks for money just to satisfy his ego, etc) I thought he was going to turn out to be Carnell gone rogue on the Federation :P

this is an interesting criteria - and i think you're right about kasabi doing the same thing as don keller, but more convincingly. what's interesting is that keller is sort of pitched as 'BIG REVELATION' and we're supposed to read him as someone who could change our ideas of servalan, whereas kasabi is just sort of thrown in amongst the many things that are happening in 'pressure point', and she has multiple purposes in the narrative, not just as an aid to backstory. i think that's what helps her to feel real. also - servalan crying is more difficult to believe in that servalan being obsessed and crazy... even if she wasn't actually obsesed and crazy in any previous episodes :D

i love the idea of carnell the mercenary rebel leader - and actually it would be pretty easy for him, because if he got enough intel he would be able to predict when whats his face would activate the device and where sentries would be placed. good idea!

Yes, I still feel a little disappointed that Carnell wasn't in that ep, even though I love Del Grant for himself XP

Yes, Kasabi's an interesting one. (Things there aren't enough fic about: Servalan and Kasabi backstory...)
