Today's topic is

For this I chose this man:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Very few episodes make me as happy as Killer, and it's all down to T. Tynus, the man, if we are to believe Paul Darrow, with "a face like a choir boy." I love the way he says "Kerr Avon!" when Avon appears, and what a slimy annoying man he is, and that he draws insects and that Avon bosses him around. It also helps that I'm sure he's an ex of Avon's, and I'm very partial to stories about ex-lovers.

In A Terrible Aspect , Tynus is definitely the best character (not saying much, but there we have it). He flies the getaway flyer but botches it because he gets nervous and takes off early, leaving Avon to cling onto the wing. They both almost die. He says something like, "oops, I panicked."

According to Paul Darrow his first name is probably Titinius, which would mean he was named for a minor character from my first fandom, Julius Caesar. In one sentence, I can tell you everything there is to know about Titinius. He supposedly got Caesar a drink when he was sick in Spain, he is Cassius' best friend (according to Cassius) and he kills himself homoerotically on Cassius' sword ("Come, Cassius' sword, and find Titinius' heart.").

If we think that Tannis from the audio Kerr was a lover of Avon's, then Avon had one lover named Tannis and one named Tynus.

All of this makes me happy. Even the ending of that ep can't bring me down.

 That is the most random happy-making thing! (And so is he Titinius Tynus? What??)

and he kills himself homoerotically on Cassius' sword ("Come, Cassius' sword, and find Titinius' heart.").

And just to complete everything, if you're watching the BBC version, he can't even do that right. ("Oops, I died wrong?")

:-)

"Oops, I died wrong?"

Laughed out loud for real! Good one.

Well, it was not decided for sure. Some people thought it should be Timothy, so on his door it just says T. Tynus.

:-D

That part is kind of hard to forget. They really must have been up against the 10pm switch-off taht day.

Timothy Tynus? He does look more like a Timothy (and it still, put together, nearly makes Titinius...)

this is a good post :) i didn't know that about JC.

i like the insect drawing thing too - it's a really weird hobby, and it instantly tells you a lot about him (vila helpfully points out quite a few things) and i like that bob holmes bothered to put something like that in for a one-shot character.

Thanks! :D

I'd forgotten that Vila interprets that for us, actually. Thank you, Bob Holmes, for adding that detail <3

Robert Holmes did wonderful guest characters (my own beloved Jarriere was one of his); I loved both Tynus and Bellfriar in this episode.

Bellfriar is also great, and Jarrier, too! Holmes might be the best at guest characters. Thanks for commenting!

He absolutely was... on Classic Who, one of my absolute favourite episodes is his largely because of the guests - Carnival of Monsters :)

*cries* I want to rewatch Tynus SO MUCH and I can't because Killer traumatised me HORRIBLY. I couldn't sleep, that plague was just one of the worst ever (it's the memory thing. Awful, awful, awful. I mean, it's amazing, brilliant TV but I was so upset at the end) Everything you say here makes me want to watch it MORE and ship more Avon/Tynus and woe, woe, woe.

(and he is totally Avon's ex. I managed to rewatch the first scenes because there's no plague and I was all "... okay, yes, suddenly seeing it absolutely, you're all over him!")

Oh, no! That's tragic! There's a very good fic by Nova (not online, but I could send you if you're interested--but maybe you don't want to read), where the plague in Killer scares Avon so much that the federation uses it to get him to break under interrogation

One day, I shall get over it and watch the episode again. Maybe at the beginning of the day. Give me time to forget about it at night!

Okay, that fic sounds really kind of good so despite my fears, I'd quite love to see it! E-mail it to me? (empressoftheeclipse @ yahoo.co.uk )
